Blackbird-in-Chief

Hello, Friend. I’m Nikki Kirsch, Blackbird-in-Chief here on The Limb. I heard an interview with Paul McCartney on NPR’s “Fresh Air with Terry Gross”. In it, he describes the inspiration behind their classic song, “Blackbird”. One afternoon, he and John saw a group of young, black women. This was during the Civil Rights movement and they realized what a critical time this was for these women. They chose the Blackbird as a symbol of the challenged and the change coming.

I’ve always loved that song, and even sang it as a lullaby to my son. After hearing that interview, I fell in love with the song all over again. The song gives me hope, strength, and the inspiration to journey “into the light of [the] dark black night.”

And I know that each of us has waited for it. We’ve watched for it, prayed for it, sacrificed & prepared for it. And I know that at some point, I’ve avoided the presence of it. That moment. The Moment.

If it’s one thing I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older it’s that The Moment is coming for me. I’ve got to CREATE it. I’ve got to step out onto the limb on the Tree of Life with my wings at the ready, catch the wind and fly.

Blackbird Adventures is a record of my journey. I’m out on the limb. Are you coming?
